GST registration is an important compliance step for businesses in India. Whether you are starting a proprietorship, partnership firm, LLP, company, e-commerce business, or service-based firm, keeping the correct documents ready can save time and avoid GST application rejection.

As per the GST portal process, PAN is mandatory for GST registration, and the application is filed online through Services > Registration > New Registration on the GST portal. The applicant must provide business details, promoter/partner details, authorised signatory details, principal place of business, goods/services details, Aadhaar authentication, and verification.

Documents Required for GST Registration in 2026

1. PAN Card

PAN of the proprietor, firm, LLP, company, trust, society, or business entity is required. For proprietorship, the proprietor’s PAN is used.

2. Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar of the proprietor, partner, director, or authorised signatory is required for identity verification and Aadhaar authentication.

3. Photograph

Recent passport-size photograph of the proprietor, partner, director, or authorised signatory is required. The GST portal allows photograph upload for promoter/partner and authorised signatory details.

4. Proof of Business Constitution

Depending on the type of business, the following documents may be required:

Business Type

Document Required

Proprietorship

Proprietor PAN and basic business details

Partnership Firm

Partnership deed

LLP

LLP agreement and incorporation certificate

Company

Certificate of incorporation, MOA/AOA, board resolution

Trust/Society

Registration certificate and authorisation document

5. Principal Place of Business Proof

For GST registration, address proof of the business place is very important.

Nature of Premises

Documents Required

Owned Premises

Electricity bill, property tax receipt, municipal khata copy, or ownership proof

Rented/Leased Premises

Rent/lease agreement plus owner’s electricity bill/property tax receipt

Consent/Shared Premises

Consent letter/NOC plus owner’s electricity bill or municipal khata copy

The GST portal specifically mentions ownership proof for own premises, rent/lease agreement with owner proof for rented premises, and consent letter with owner proof for other/shared premises.

6. Bank Details

Bank account details, cancelled cheque, or bank statement may be kept ready. However, bank account details in the GST registration application were made optional from 27 December 2018 and can be updated after GSTIN is granted through amendment.

7. Authorised Signatory Proof

If someone is authorised to sign and submit GST documents, proof of appointment is required. For companies and LLPs, this may include board resolution, authorisation letter, or consent of partners/directors. The GST portal provides upload options for proof of appointment and photograph of the authorised signatory.

8. Digital Signature Certificate

DSC is generally required for companies and LLPs. Proprietorship and partnership applicants may usually verify through Aadhaar-based authentication or EVC, depending on the portal requirement.

Quick Checklist Before Applying

Keep these ready before starting the GST application:

PAN card, Aadhaar card, mobile number, email ID, photograph, business constitution proof, principal place address proof, rent agreement/NOC if applicable, bank details, authorised signatory proof, and DSC where required.

Conclusion

GST registration becomes simple when documents are arranged properly before filing the application. The most common reason for delay is incorrect address proof, missing NOC, mismatch in PAN details, or improper authorisation documents. For smooth registration, ensure that all documents are clear, valid, readable, and match the business details.
